Mission Over Mars - MOM: First Impressions Of ALTBalaji And Zee5’s Latest Show
Ever since the show Mission Over Mars (M.O.M.) has been announced, it has met with a lot of interest and curiosity in the digital community. Coming after the success of Mission Mangal which dealt with the same subject, the expectations were sky high (literally!) The Mangalyaan mission was kick started in 2013 by ISRO and while all the names of the agencies and people involved have been fictionalized in Mission Over Mars, for those familiar with the mission, you feel the same elation.

With only 5 episodes out on what we can assume to be a ten episode show, M.O.M picks up right from the very beginning. The show opens in a small town in Bihar in the 80s. A girl in the class knows the answer to a question beyond her years. Meet Moushumi Ghosh (Mona Singh), an eccentric but brilliant scientist who doubles up as a divorcee who is plagued by the guilt of being a working mother. She is joined at the ISA (Indian Space Agency, a fictionalized version of ISRO) by other women who are powerhouses.

Nandita (Sakshi Tanwar) is the leader of the mission, a great team leader by day and a paranoid mother by night. Neetu (Nidhi Singh) is a sometimes confident, sometimes nervous team member who goes by superstition one minute and claims that she can never make a mistake in the next. Meghan (Palomi Ghosh) is an analyst and also someone who lives her life based on hard facts alone. The success of M.O.M lies in these women, each of them flawed, each of them relatable and more importantly, like they say, each of them is a scientist, and not a female scientist.

Before you know it, not only are you rooting for the mission, but you are rooting for these women. They face the worst challenges on the way – corporate greed, unrealistic timelines, tight budgets, gender discrimination. With a long way to go in terms of the mission being a success, we can’t wait to see how the story progresses.

Mission Over Mars (M.O.M.) isn’t a show that gets everything right. Some parts seem a little too dramatized and could have been toned down but what it does is give us a bunch of strong female characters – something we don’t get to see too often.
